Somme Summer
This iconic image of British soldiers was captured by Lt. John Warwick in July of 1916. One of the biggest battles of WWI and in all of recorded history, the Battle of the Somme raged for over 5 months, leaving a million and a half men killed or wounded. It is recorded that JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, and Adolf Hitler all participated in the Battle of the Somme.
Depicted here is the machine gun team manning position with a Vickers .303 Machine Gun, equipped with PH (Phenate Hexamine) helmets to help withstand chemical attacks.
